Lån & Spar reduced the project portfolio by 70%

With a portfolio management model, the bank gained a greater overview and rigorous prioritizing of the development projects, so they are now in coherence with the overall strategy and are visible on the bottom line. 

Problem

A changeable market requires an organization, that can trim and tailor the business to fit the current market conditions. And precisely tempo and changeability can make it difficult to stop projects, that previously brought the business great value, but that due to changed market conditions are not contributing as much anymore.   

In Lån & Spar a portfolio of development projects had been worked up, which proportions were not consistent with the size of the bank and the number of employees. They therefore needed to trim the project portfolio down to solely the development projects that created value for the business and were visible on the bottom line. 

Solution

In collaboration with Lån & Spar, Peak’s consultants developed a portfolio management model in order to reduce the number of projects. The model prioritized the different projects according to criteria, which are closely connected with the strategic goals of the bank. This is also connected to, the extent to which the individual project’s completion can be expected to increase sales, customer- and employee satisfaction as well as the potential to manage project costs, and whether the project is necessary for adhering to legal requirements. 

Aside from savings, the smaller number of projects has also brought increased employee satisfaction, states the bank’s portfolio manager, Peter Mølkjær. He observes that projects are carried out more effectively, with clearer objectives and deadlines for when a project must be completed.  

“Today the bank can adjust itself faster and easier to legal requirements and market development. The time spent going from idea to finished product has become shorter, and the quality of our solutions is better,” Peter Mølkjær says.
