New project model created better project culture at the Department of Forensic Medicine

The Department of Forensic Medicine went through a cultural change and became sharper in their project work. Four consultants with individual competencies within project-, portfolio and change management, as well as Peak’s course department, were involved in the initiative. .

Problem

The Section of Forensic Genetics at University of Copenhagen’s Department of Forensic Medicine investigates, among other things, paternity cases for The State Administration and DNA clues for the police. The section always has 5-10 active development projects. And while the section did have a well-developed project toolbox, it was not really being used systematically. This was caused, not by a lack of knowledge of the toolbox, but by the tools being entirely too extensive and confusing – and there was also a lack of a common understanding of what working on projects involves 

Solution

Peak’s consultants and course department established a course, where 25 central managers and employees, over the course of 6 months, went through a wide range of full- and half day sessions. These focused on: 

  • Why project work is important and a professional competency in and of itself. 
  • A common understanding of both the problem and the solution. 
  • Training in portfolio tasks for management  
  • A simple project model and an exposition of the tasks connected to the different project roles 
  • Adjustment of the culture in the department so project management is reserved for fewer, trained employees. 

 The employees from the department’s project office also became PRINCE2® certified and thereby elevated their competencies so they could handle the key roles of the project work. This resulted in the management and the project office becoming prepared to take over for Peak’s consultants after the course had ended.
